Once the weather starts changing, it’s natural to start thinking about all the things on your to-do list. It’s been a long, cold winter, and things just start looking dingy over time. Not only that, but over the winter it gets pretty easy to just throw things in a closet until it gets all jumbled and disorganized, the windows get dirty and streaky, and the winter clothes need to be switched out for your summer attire. That list just gets longer and longer, but doesn’t it sound like fun to get to the bottom of that list so you can go out and spend time in the summer sunshine? Of course, at the top of the list should be giving Jiminy Chimney Masonry and Repair a call and set up your annual chimney inspection and cleaning. There’s another job that you should consider having done, and that’s having your dryer vents professionally cleaned. Lucky for you, you can save yourself a phone call and set up an appointment to have this done by Jiminy Chimney as well!
Why Have Them Cleaned?
It’s common knowledge that you need to clean out your lint screen after every dryer load or two. Unfortunately, most people think that this is enough. It isn’t. When you wash your clothes, your washer puts them through a drain and spin cycle, and this gets most of the water out of your clothes. Most, but not all. That’s what the dryer is for. But how does your dryer accomplish this exactly? Your dryer drum has ‘spokes’ on it which carry the clothes up to the top of the drum as it spins, then allows that clothes drop down to the bottom of the drum again. As this is happening, warm air is pushed through the drum by way of a fan and out through the dryer vent in the back of your dryer. The air is pushed through the lint screen on its way out, and that is where the minute particles of lint and fuzz get stuck on the way out. When you clean your lint tray, you get rid of those particles, which eliminates some of the chances of a dryer fire. However, not all of those particles get caught; some slip through and travel down the venting system. Because this air is moist from the clothes, those particles are more likely to stick to the sides of the vent tubing, and that’s a fire hazard. One spark from the dryer and this highly flammable material can burst into flames, and that could be a disastrous situation.
