The holidays are almost upon us and with that comes family. While that may be a positive or negative, you want to keep them safe either way. A dirty chimney during the holiday season could expose your relatives and family to dangerous carbon monoxide or chimney fires. Make sure your fireplace is in safe, working condition with a chimney sweeping. All it takes is a phone call to Jiminy Chimney Masonry and Repair to clean the chimney before the family arrives!
If keeping Santa clean isn’t a big enough incentive for having your chimney swept, then think about the safety issues that a dirty chimney poses. When you use your fireplace a lot, it gets dirty. You clean out the firebox periodically and get rid of the ashes in a safe manner, but getting at the interior of your chimney is a bit more difficult. When smoke is released from the logs in your fire, it contains water vapor and several chemicals. It’s great that this travels up your chimney because these chemicals can be hazardous to your health. As it travels up your chimney, however, some of that water vapor condenses onto the interior of the chimney, especially near the top where the surface is cooler. It hardens into a film, and over time, this film can become a hard, crusty layer of nastiness called creosote. Creosote is a fire hazard, especially as the layer gets thicker. In fact, an eighth of an inch of creosote is a significant fire hazard, which is why it’s so important to have your chimney cleaned annually.
Another reason to have your chimney cleaned is because of blockages. Over the summer, birds, squirrels, or even raccoons can use your chimney as a place to build nests and raise their families. When they move out, the nest stays behind and dries out. Other things can blow into your chimney as well, like dry leaves and other debris, and any of these things can create a blockage in your chimney that could easily catch a spark and cause a chimney fire.
