It’s getting chilly in Barrington, Illinois! The leaves are changing and falling, the grass is crunchy underfoot, and the breeze feels like it’s getting colder. With that chill comes the fun of raking leaves and burning them, and maybe even roasting some hot dogs and marshmallows over the blaze. You might also be looking forward to having a fire burning in your fireplace. There’s no better way to take the chill out of your bones after a day of cleaning up the yard then to stretch out in front of a snapping fire. There are some safety precautions you need to take before you start using your fireplace for the winter, and the number one precaution you should take is having your chimney and fireplace inspected and cleaned before you start using it.
When you call Jiminy Chimney Masonry and Repair to come in and inspect your chimney, we’ll be looking at all the major components of your chimney to make sure that there aren’t any problem areas that could cause health or safety concerns for your family and your prized possessions, including your home. We’ll look at the chimney cap and chimney crown to make sure that there aren’t areas that are allowing leaks in, and we’ll recommend repair for your crown and possibly even replacement for your cap if it’s broken or rusted. Maybe your flashing is loose and water is sneaking through there. We can take care of that, too. We’ll check out the state of your mortar, and see if the structure of your chimney is sound. If there’s anything wrong with your chimney, we’ll find it and we’ll fix it.
Over the course of a winter’s use, your chimney can get very dirty. Smoke is water vapor that escapes from the wood that is being burned mixed with chemicals that escape during the combustion process. As that water vapor sneaks up your chimney, it hits the cooler surface at the top and condenses there. This is called creosote, and it can come in several different forms, black and shiny or brown and crumbly. No matter how it develops, it is highly flammable. In fact, even as little as an eighth of an inch of buildup can catch a spark and cause a chimney fire. It’s pretty clear that this is a dangerous situation, but it’s also easily taken care of when we come in and clean your chimney.
